The Making Process
The image used in this essay has to do with the battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. This image shows exactly what happened after the battle and what the troops did after the battle. These U.S. soldiers were brave enough to represent the United States by fighting and raising up the flag right after the battle. As the author of the book Immortal Images, Ted Thomey stated the following: "I write this book to make a permanent record of the sacrifices and courage of these men." (Preface, xiv) They stood up for our country and displayed a sense of freedom for the United States. As Robert Hartman and John Louis Lucaites stated in their book Quarterly Journal of Speech, "There is arguably no image that resonates more with the popular understanding of the U.S. role in World War II than the photograph of five Marines and a Navy hospital corpsman raising the stars and stripes atop Iwo Jima's Mt. Suribachi on February 23, 1945." (363) According to the authors of Nightmare on Iwo Jima, there were three flags raised on Iwo Jima, it was not know because only the second photo went world wide. (Caruso & Rathgeber, 147)
The audience I am appealing for the most is to students or young student adults. The reason is because young student adults are in the process of learning all about World War II and they should know about this event because it is a great example of the display of freedom. This audience should be more interested in this event because they are at the age of learning about historical events.
I used a variety of pictures with proud soldiers holding and American flag. This should help the viewer get a glimpse of the argument. These images were carefully chosen to relate to the primary image. There was nothing much added other than the images. There were no designs added or any kind of different text or colors. I did work on keeping everything in order and setting different tabs for each section of the argument. This helped my website look more organized and help the viewers find what they are looking for.
I incorporated the use of ethos in this visual argument by providing really emotional images about the subject. This would get the viewer emotional and change his or her way of thinking about soldiers and what they do for this country. The images should dig deeply into the viewers emotional and change of strengthen that point of view about soldiers. The very first image provided for the viewers is a very common image because it went worldwide. Many students of older people have seen the image and have had an impact by the image. The image is very powerful and it should help me get the viewer to agree with my argument because I am very knowledgeable about the subject. The colors represent the emotions and my awareness about the argument.
The pathos in this visual argument is based on the emotional feeling of these images. Many people have loved ones that have gone to war and fought for our freedom. They understand how valuable soldiers are and honor everything they do for the United States. The use of these images, especially the first one, engages the reader or viewer effectively because it is very popular. Finally, I believe that the slideshow of images are very catchy and engaging because soldiers are party of this country and it is them who bring freedom the United States.
The integration of logos is the strongest appeal to this visual argument because the images itself are self explanatory. By placing all of the images into one slide show and putting them in an effective order, this would engage the reader because the title and the pictures make a strong argument. By having a self explanatory title, the viewers would have a viewpoint about the argument. Having both the images and the title interact with each other made the integration of logos the strongest of them all because it is a very good combination.
The process was very challenging for me because this was something that I had never done before. I had not practice what so ever in this type of arguments and I have to say that I did struggle. The most I struggled with was identifying the logos, pathos, and ethos. I had work with these three appeals but I have never combined them into an argument. The integration and writing about it was very challenging because the three appeals are somewhat alike but yet very distinct. I did get confused with identifying each of them. I did not have a problem choosing the pictures or creating the website. It was just the writing process of the appeals that really got me. Nothing changed after my first initial draft of my visual argument because I felt confident about it. I did change some of my wording in the project essay portion. The most effective aspect in my project would be the visual text. I believe I did a great job in choosing the correct images for the written text. I gave a little bit of background information about the images and answered all of the questions. I also did a fine job in the layout of the visual text and the font and color of the whole website. The visual text would be the most effective aspect in my project.
Having feedback from some of my peers was really helpful because they helped me correct my mistakes and point out what was missing or not well developed in my project. I was able to take that feed back and integrate it into the project by fixing mostly everything that was suggested by my peers, such as the title. It was a suggestion that i change the title of the project because it didn't go along with my argument and the title was way off. The title at first was freedom for soldiers and my argument was that soldiers fight for freedom. Those were two very different arguments and at the end I changed the title to soldiers fighting for freedom. Another suggestion from one of my peers would be making ethos and logos more effective. My peer said that there was a lack of ethos and logos in my visual text. I did my best to try to fix it and I believe that the lack of logos and ethos is gone. Furthermore, responding to the work of others helped me with my work because I was able to read and understand some of the appeals that I had trouble with. I was able to apply that knowledge into my project and improve it and make it better. Overall, it helped me understand certain things that i was uncertain about.
Overall, I believe I planned that website way ahead of time. I did a really great job with the website and the images because I planned them right when they were assigned. The writing portion of the assignment was not planned out ahead of time because I had trouble with figuring out the appeals. I did do most of the writing portion and had no trouble with it until I got to the part of the ethos, logos, and pathos. I should have gained knowledge about them ahead of time and I would have not had that problem while writing my project. I had no problem with the assignment what so ever, I was only confused with identifying the appeals. I did plan out my project ahead of time and gave myself enough time to create the first draft.
