Visual Argument Peer Review
The visual image should contain a clear and specific statement of claim being made. The written text should address the process of completing the visual argument. To what degree does the writer:
- Yes, the website uses a variety of design principles effectively. The essay is split up among different pages, which adds to the presentation. Furthermore, the front page has a slideshow with multiple pictures, which are very clean and add to the point. Lastly, the font and colors used are extremely fitting for the topic covered.
- There isn't really any incorporation of ethos, logos, or pathos in the project essay. You may want to add that in, but it seems like the current draft is unfinished, so that is probably why there’s no incorporation. Just add it in before the final, and everything will be good!
- This is geared towards young adults and students. I know this because it is effectively incorporated into the essay.
- The essay thoroughly depicts what the visual images mean and in what context they were taken. There just needs to be a bit more of a tie between the context and what claim this makes. Again, I’m not sure if the title throws off the meaning of what the argument is (freedom for soldiers or soldiers for freedom? I think there’s an issue with the preposition/object). Other than that, I’m sure the completed essay will completely tie in the claim with the historical background and such. Good job!

The visual image should contain a clear and specific statement of claim being made. The written text should address the process of completing the visual argument. To what degree does the writer:
- The image is effective because it is a group of men who even in a bad setting are working together to accomplish a common goal, and specifically a common goal to the benefit of Americans.
- The fact that everything is black and white except the American flag is a very strong statement and it draws the eye to the flag immediately, as does the centrality of the flag to the picture. It follows the principles of design well and uses the devastated background and foreground of the image to frame the soldiers lifting the flag very effectively and makes the contrast very emotionally significant.
- The argument has ethos due to the fact that it portrays a group effort of soldiers to accomplish a common goal even in bad circumstances. It has pathos, because it appeals to the patriotism of Americans and the effort required to accomplish a significant goal, no matter where. It has logos, because it goes from the bottom up to show the devastated background, then soldiers working and then a flag pole being lifted as a goal.
- The target audience is Americans, because of the centrality and highlighting of the American flag in the image. It is especially targeted towards veterans and those sympathetic to veterans, because of the soldiers doing the lifting of the flag.
- The essay gives a good background and explains the target audience according to the author, but the other questions on the prompt have no answer or response, which needs to be fixed.

The visual image should contain a clear and specific statement of claim being made. The written text should address the process of completing the visual argument. To what degree does the writer:
- The images used are extremely expressive. Each one does a good job expressing the idea that soldiers are inherently good/heroic. However, I’m unsure as to what the argument is specifically.
- The contrast is the strongest design principle being used. I interpret this as being solemn, which is similar to what the images are trying to express.
- I felt like the strongest appeal was pathos. All of the images chosen are extremely expressive. I felt like Ethos and Logos were lacking, as I didn’t understand what the argument being made was aside from soldiers being heroic.
- The image was geared towards americans due to the fact that all of the flags and soldiers were American. Members of foreign countries aren’t as likely to share the belief that soldiers, or American Soldiers, are heroic or fighting for freedom.
- The written text was good. It answered all the questions in a logical order.
